Part of a canal system in southern France that runs from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, the Canal du Midi is a fabulous biking destination. Be aware that the trees you see here are under attack from a blight and will eventually have to be replaced :-(

The canals were built in the 1600s to allow the French to move cargo from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean without having to go through the Straights of Gibraltar and pay a toll to the Spanish or deal with pirates! About 350 years old, the canal is well maintained and still in use, primarily for tour boats. Talk about slow travel!
