After seeing a picture of this scene before the second trip, I was very eager to visit. I took that trip in fall in hopes of hitting the leaves at their peak. I was very lucky :-)

Kyoto was spared from extensive bombing in WWII, reputedly because a high ranking officer in the US military had been there and loved it. Tokyo, not to mention Nagasaki and Hiroshima, weren’t so lucky :-(
