Delphi
Delphi

This is all the way back on the mainland after I flew back to Athens from Crete. My original flight was cancelled, and there was another delay of 6 hours or so. Total delays on the trip added up to 20 hours!

From Athens, I took a bus tour to Delphi, home of the famous Oracle, as well as the site of the ancient Pythian Games, part of the quadrennial cycle of the Olympics. This is the ruins of the temple of Apollo, home of the Oracle. It was recorded in ancient times that the Oracle breathed sacred fumes from the bowels of the earth and went into a trance-like state before making her predictions. In modern times, a single scholar debunked this story on no particularly well founded grounds and was somehow believed for years, until team of geologists verified the details of the original story. Read all about it in Scientific American!
