3 Louvre Pyramide
3 Louvre Pyramide

This new structure, located between the arms of the inner Louvre, covers the visitor center, ticket office, and tunnels to the wings. It was completed in 1989 to mixed reviews, but is unquestionably striking.

Here’s a tip for visiting the museum. First get your tickets beforehand somewhere other than the main ticket office under the pyramid. There are (or were) kiosks located in the underground shopping center, the “Carrousel du Louvre” (out beyond the pyramid as seen from here and also the subject of criticism). You can also get to the area under the pyramid from there without waiting in line (usually). You can also typically get tickets through your hotel. Then plan on arriving about one half hour after the museum opens. By that time, the initial crowds have usually cleared out and entry should be easier.

This advice on entry applies to the other popular museums, including the Musee D’Orsay across the river and down a little. If you like Impressionist paintings, you’ll find a large collection there, many more than at the Louvre.

Your mileage may vary (especially with COVID-19!).
