Possibly the finest walled city in Europe, Carcassonne (visible on the hill on the left) is not too far from the southern border of France with Spain over toward the east end, but not quite in the mountains. Like several other places in this travelogue, it benefitted from restoration in the 19th century. Like Notre Dame, under the ministrations of Violet-le-Duc.
It lies on the River Aude, seen on the right in the above picture. The next picture shows the Porte de l’Aude on the river side of the Cite.
The high tower on the left side of this picture was the setting for a dramatic scene in a 1981 movie starring Kevin Costner, with the subtitle “Prince of Thieves”. This location was used despite the fact that that movie was supposed to be taking place in England.
