And this is Mercury Bay on the Coromandel Peninsula opposite Auckland on the northeast coast of the North Island. It was here that Cook’s expedition watched a rare transit of the planet Mercury across the Sun’s face. Look for the hole in one of the rock outcroppings in the bay.
