This is at Wellington on the southern tip of the North Island. Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and is a nice city as well as the southernmost national capital, however there is quite a bit of development as you approach it (it’s on the tip of the Island.)

The ferry crosses the Cook Straight. It’s not that far. You can see each island from the other side. It was pretty expensive, be sure to check and plan for that.
